I will be using this list to send out review copies of eFiction and attempt to get some more eyes on our work. You can use this…[Read more]

So I’ve come up with a compromise about how we are going to offer free content. People coming from Google will be able to read one story before being prompted to pay for a subscription to read more. All the stories will still be posted on the site, but if you’re not a subscriber, you won’t be able to comment or read the full issue. Subscribers…[Read more]

I currently have the Kindle subscription. Will I need to modify it for the new program?
-
Doug Lance
Nope. I think what I’ll do is make it so people can send some form of proof that they subscribe on Kindle and enable the perks on their eFiction account for them.
-
Preston McConkie
I’m personally happy to pay the subscription; that’s been my plan from the beginning. I’m not sure that paying will give a sense of ownership; I think GETTING paid would certainly do that. But it might hopefully give a sense of commitment and encourage subscribers to be involved. If there were a way to reward significant participation with free…[Read more]

I also think that announcing this change might be more welcome if you assured people that the basic character of the magazine would not change. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear that already-successful authors would be attracted by paying for stories, is that the community creativity would decline, and eFiction might become just…[Read more]

If anything, it will foster creativity. I’ve applied for a few jobs, which carry a decent salary with them. I’m hoping to work these jobs to fund my living expenses while spending all extra income on the magazine and opening up the magazine’s revenue to contributors and contest stuff. Ideally, all the money we make would go back into the…[Read more]

What do you think about abolishing free content on eFiction? Should all of our stories be pay-to-read?
-
James Darrow
Maybe having a story (two tops) as a sample, per issue, might be a good idea. It gives new readers a chance to get a feel for what the magazine offers, and yet it still offers them incentive to pick up a subscription. As it is, I think that perhaps too many stories are showcased for free, per issue, that it slightly de-values a subscription.
-
D.D. Escalante
disagree. I cant read any of the stories on my new Samsung windows 7 tablet. maybe its cause i’m in Asia but its hard enough to get samples on certain servers and PCs. as soon as I finish Steinbeck on my train ride to Hong Kong I’ll be buying them on my kindle.and yes my spelling is terrible. I’m still figuring out how to use windows 7 program.
-
Doug Lance
DD, subscribers get the issues in all formats, so you could upload it to your tablet and read in a more convenient format than the site offers.
-
-
Doug Lance
James, I think that might be a good idea. What do you guys think about limiting the social networking aspects of the site to subscribers only?
-
Preston McConkie
I was introduced to eFiction through the 14-day free trial that, I believe, is available for all Kindle magazines. That was plenty to get me hooked and happy to spend cash for the rest of the issues. I suspect you could do the same thing through the site, following the time-honored method of requiring a credit/debit card to sign up for the trial,…[Read more]
-
Doug Lance
We sell subscriptions on the site with a 14-day free trial right now.
I’d probably give people who are already on the site a free subscription for a while. I think having the 2 bucks a month to get in the door would keep out the riffraff and make sure that everyone here is committed.
-
Doug Lance
Or we could deduct points to view stories, but the drawback with that option is that people might start spamming the site to get more points. It is impossible to prevent that at this point.
-
Norv
Personally, I find much better to have a number of stories available for free, eventually after a little while since initial (paid) publishing. IMHO it can much harder be expected from one to look into introducing their credit card for a magazine they don’t see very recent content of.
On limiting social networking to subscribers… I’m not sure.…[Read more]-
Norv
It seems very likely that if points will be usable to view stories, we’d get more activity… not necessarily of a constructive kind.

I think it’s a great idea, 2 bucks is hardly breaking the bank, and if that’s what it takes to keep the magazine running long and proud then so be it. I think with the 14 day trial and the stories available on the website’s homepage, people have enough freebies to know whether they want the good stuff, so to speak.
-
Marie Glendenning
I don’t like this idea. Normal marketing costs but free content sells Magazine subscriptions.

I was just about to alert you and then I saw you already had caught it – you would thinkthey’d at least try harder. I mean the site is a home for readers and writers for crying outloud and they send what sems to be written by nine year old just learning english. Sigh – how I weep for humanity
-
James Darrow
I’ve yet to find a single bot or spammer that tried harder than a nine year old, Raven. Either way, apparently eFiction’s gotten large enough to warrant getting spammed. It’s a good sign, folks!

The first one really pops out at me, the second one not as much.

Doug Lance
Aww, I thought the second one was funny.

Sharon E Mamolo
I like the first one also. Straight and to the point.
-

I liked both banners. I would use the second on my own site — if I had one — because I love sarcasm. It works for me. It works for my friends. So why not make both available, particularly since one is vertical and the other horizontal and variety is a fine, fine thing?
-
Doug Lance
All banners I make, as will any anyone else contributes, will be available in your Affiliate manager under ”Banners”.
-
-
Leila Gaskin
So, I’m on wordpress and the horizontal banner I like, but is too large for my side bar. Is there away to have scaleable versions?

Doug Lance
What dimension would be ideal for you?

Width 175 Height 200 That’s what fits the best. When I finally get a website up, the larger banner will be a perfect size. Thanks!

@Doug Lance – Suggestion. In the Profiles section, add a text field to link to one’s Amazon Author Page (or on other provider sites).

That’s under the ”Other” tab.

I get the impression Doug does not necessarily want to link to author’s pages judging by the ads…I think the ads without links are a great idea btw, and I suggested something similar to someone who is starting up in pub…I used your e-Zine as a good example of a well-formatted e-pub btw…

I might just be having a blonde moment (no offense to any blondes out there). I’ve signed up. I couldn’t see any banners to use for my link. So i used the following http://www.efictionmag.com/?ap_id=myusername but it just beings me to the homepage of eFiction (I logged out before trying the said link). Help?

Doug Lance
That’s all that it does, is bring you to the site. But there is a small cookie that is saved on the visitors computer that tells the site that you were the referring affiliate.

If you want me to make some banners, I can. What sizes would be best?
