I just finished reading this month’s issue of eFiction…impressive. I even got into the poetry–not my thing, but it’s surprising how many poetry contributions I truly enjoy. Even old writers like me can learn some new tricks too–I found myself saying “That’s cool!” like an old sixties hippy all too often. By the way, for anybody…[Read more]

I’m back! I’ve been busy releasing two more sci-fi thrillers and upgrading my website. Well, there was putting out the patio furniture too in order to enjoy some of the nice early summer (?) weather. The latter only benefits me, my friends, and my family, obviously. The former hopefully benefits all readers. I’m hoping my muses slack off…[Read more]

Hello readers! Would you guys be interested in audio versions of the eFiction stories? I could put them up on iTunes or other podcast services for a free subscription, so you have the audio versions on the go. What about short author Youtube interviews after the stories? Sounds like fun right?
- 5 people like this.

Marie Glendenning
Would the audio versions be read by the authors or by actors? An interview with the author could be a nice addition.
-
Doug Lance
We’ll have voice actors. I’m in talks with a service to record the stories for us.
-
Marie Glendenning
It sounds like an excellent plan! Audio stories are very pleasant for long drives and are great for the visually impaired.

I agree. I drive between Chicago and Ann Arbor all the time and I would go nuts without my audiobooks and podcasts.

I think it would be excellent. I’ve done recordings for Librivox, so I know the perils of relying on volunteer voice readers, but I think you could create a whole new level of participation if you relied on volunteer readers instead of a paid service (though maybe the service is an organization like this and would handle the headache of quality…[Read more]

Any chance of eFiction becoming available on Barnes & Noble? I’m a lonely Nook owner and sad I can’t take the mag with me.

B&N is notorious for being very picky about what publications they allow in their store. I can host up individual issues, but they’ll always be a month behind. Maybe we can bombard B&N with letters and emails demanding eFIction be made available.
-
Phillip McCollum
Sounds like a plan to me!
-
-
Richard Sutton
I’ll also request it through them __ I just got a free Nook Touch for subscribing to the NY Times Digital edittion for a year. It will save me money over what I pay for the print edition anyway, so adding eFiction is a natural.
-
Doug Lance
You guys could always purchase the issues through this site and then just upload them to your Nook.
-
Phillip McCollum
Good point Doug. Do you prefer to have additional subscribers or individual purchases though? Though I’m sure the answer is both.
-
Doug Lance
Monthly subscribers create a reliable income, which when enough people subscribe will enable us to pay professional rates to contributing writers. So I prefer subscriptions. That said, the monthly subscription includes EPUB files.
-
Phillip McCollum
Ah! And here I was thinking it was Kindle format only. I just subscribed…
-
Doug Lance
You should receive a ZIP file containing the EPUB, MOBI, and PDF of the issue. Let me know if there was an issue with the initial delivery.
-
Phillip McCollum
Thanks Doug. I received my receipts and confirmations, but no ZIP file yet.

Is there any way to BUY the monthly magazine without using a credit card? I keep a balance in Amazon Paypal. I don’t mind using a credit card for individual purchases but I hate to give the go-ahead for automatic payments for anything. I’m reading the comments and reviews and it’s killing me to not be able to read the newest issues.

Can you use Amazon Paypal to purchase items on Amazon?
-
Sandra Lang
There’s a separate Paypal for Amazon? Oy!

Doug Lance
You said Amazon Paypal. I’m confused. haha.

Thank you, Steven.
Almost off-topic, I’d have a question, if I may.
Have you considered other avenues than amazon.com, and/or other formats than for their Kindle?

Just a thought on promotion and readers finding out about: I wonder if and how much do topics on goodreads help, in more groups of the target audience.

Hi Norv,
I seemed to have touched a nerve. If so, I apologize…
My nerve is that I want to write, write, write, not market, market, market, but why write if there are no readers? I think my stuff would probably resonate with anyone reading English. For me, readers rule. However, I can only do so much. I know many people still prefer pBooks…[Read more]-

Hi Phyllis (Maggie) [I'm confused about which you prefer],
My bad to accuse you. I’ll rationalize it away by saying mine was a freebie too. I just wanted to give my friends here at eFiction a chance to download a freebie if they were interested. I believe I’ve maintained a policy of not pushing any books that were not freebies.
All the best,

I find that’s it’s often daunting…asking myself, ”Steve, old boy, why can’t you write something like that?” But then again, I have enough of my own stories in me and some muses that often don’t let me sleep that I shrug the ”daunting” off and keep truckin’….

Sure, read other’s works, study their style, get a sense of what how things are done. Then once your comfortable with what others have done, take away only that which compliments your own style, but don’t be tied to it. Write about what you know, dig deep into who you are, and use that self-knowledge to create something that is yours alone.

Somehow I missed your first line and Doug’s announcement. I think a lifetime subscription for contributors is a bad idea. It sounds like tenure in teaching. I’ve never wanted to coast on past laurels but look ahead to the future. It’ll be interesting to see what others think….
-
Kevin Fraleigh
I don’t think the lifetime subscription matters one way or another really. It’s no different than being paid with two copies of the issue your story was published in. Hello all, It’s the day before Halloween. I’m sitting on the sofa sipping Theraflu and wallowing in ghoulies. Just read Leila Gaskin’s ”Day Seven”. I never liked the word zombie, but, of course, my October contribution to eFiction was about one of the dear fellows. It was more about a time warp, though, so I was only partially tainted by zombie mania. LOL. Theraflu implies flu…I’m surprised you can even read what you’re reading with aches and a fever…get well soon!
