In January last year I discovered Wattpad on my new iPod Touch. I looked at dozens of e-books before giving up. Every few months I look again at some of their most recommended titles, but each contains more tripe than a dish of menudo, and more crap than a construction site port-a-pooper. Yet some of the books have more than a million “reads.”…[Read more]

Today I’m reading the free Amazon ebook, “When Graveyards Yawn,” by G. Wells Taylor. It’s the first in the Apocalypse trilogy and the first and third books are free, while the second is $3.99. The first is so remarkable that I bought the second while only a relatively short way into the first, and of course I downloaded the third as well. If…[Read more]

Still reading and loving “When Graveyards Yawn,” a conglomeration of hardboiled detective pulp with an original twist on the zombie apocalypse — plus horror-clown imagery, in yet another wholly original twist. This was written in 2002 and, apparently, never saw print. Why it wasn’t printed is a puzzle, since it’s on par with the best…[Read more]

Recently read “Circus of the Dead” by Seth Blackburn, a free ebook through Amazon. It tries hard to be a reincarnation of Ray Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes” with a zombie twist, and it comes very close. If Blackburn had a good editor I think he could nail it, but it reads like a writer’s own final draft that hasn’t been…[Read more]

I adore zombie ANYTHING. I think that there is so much to talk about regarding what zombies represent, how they have agency, etc. Interesting stuff. Have you seen the Walking Dead series at all, based on the graphic novel?

I watched the first season of Walking Dead, and it was fantastic. More depth and complexity than I expect from a TV show, or even most Hollywood movies. I haven’t seen the second season because I don’t have TV but watch all my media via computer and iPhone and therefore will wait for the season to come available on Netflix.

        It’s great to meet…[Read more]

I just saw the first two episodes of the first season, so I’m new to the show. However, I just finished showing one of my college classes 28 Days Later, as we were discussing American horror film as a genre. Many of them had never seen it, and were *very* disappointed by the ambiguous ending. But you’re right about the nature of fighting where…[Read more]

I adore 28 Days Later. It is my favorite zombie movie, bar none. Partly because I just love Britain, but that’s not the biggest reason. I’m OK with the ending; definitely like it more than the original ending where Jim dies of his gunshot wound and the girls walk hopelessly away.

That is a shame – a good editor is worth their weight in gold. Plus I firmly believe in the necessity of a beta readers.

I was astonished by the quality of stories in the April issue, which I just got yesterday and read during the night. Obviously eFiction Mag has a system for attracting good writers and getting the best work from them. Anyone writing good fiction that they self-publish must certainly have friends who beta-read and edit for them.

Has anyone read ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern? A friend sent it to me thinking I would like it and she was right. I loved that book by the time I reached page ten. I admit a certain fondness for that era influenced me but the way the author wove a wonderful tale with rich visuals while allowing so much to be created by my own…[Read more]

  • I have never read Nicholas Sparks before, my wife loves him. She convinced me to read one. So I am reading Safe Haven… I’ll let you know how it goes

Oh I can’t take Nicholas Sparks. I read the Notebook, and that was enough. Too girly for me.

I was able to begin reading the prologue, and then jumped to read about the author. Her education is impressive, and I like the narrative voice. I should be able to begin discussing it this weekend.

@Doug, I apologize for not being to follow up on this. I purchased the original title you recommended, and the second title on your recommendation as well… I’m afraid that my active recreational reading (active because this would involve discussion) is going to be on-hold until June or so when my latest college semester completes. I have been reading books right and left since I got into Library Thing and the member give away. It has made me broaden my horizons and read books I probably would never have bought. I have to write a review for all of them, which I am having a real problem with the ones I did’nt like (only 2 or 3 out of around 12 books I have won). This fact…[Read more]

I run into this problem as an author. Sometimes I know the author so I don’t want to leave a bad review. Your best bet might be to either not review it at all or leave a 3 star review and only point out the small parts that you did like. I hope this helps :)

      6 months, 2 weeks ago
      • Mark Kyhl

Thanks Charity. While we are on the subject of reviews — I try not to give too much information about the actual story content. Is that right, or should I go ahead and do a synopsis like a lot of people do?

        6 months, 2 weeks ago
        • Charity Parkerson

If there are several people who have already done a synopsis on the same book, then I wouldn’t, or your review will get lost in the sea of all the others. I never read anything past the first few good reviews, and the first few bad reviews, then I assume that the truth lies somewhere in between. I never include spoilers in my reviews because I…[Read more]

I have the same hesitation about reviewing a book that I don’t like – but the truth is what the authors want, right? I hate to be critical of something that someone worked hard on.

All in all, it is a lot easier when you like the book, than you don’t have to disappoint yourself or them.

I just completed the entire 5-book series of George Martin’s A Song of Fire & Ice. I read it hardcover. 4,643 pages in all. 14.3 lbs. But then, that’s how I judge books, by their weight. Anyone w3ho wants to read the whole review, can go to http://www.sailletales.com

I’ve had a totally different experience going through the saga since I read the first tome around 1995 (in my mid-twenties) and actually waited 5 years for A Dance with Dragons (now in my forties with 3 kids). The books are excellent and I consider GRRM one of the very best at his craft. In fact, his mature writing and realistic world makes a lot…[Read more]

I’m curious about how book clubs work, either online or in person. How exactly do you discuss the book? Chapter by chapter? Examine each character? How are the books chosen? How much time is devoted to each book? What if you have no interest in reading a particular book? Are you committed to reading and discussing it anyway? I know, I have lots…[Read more]

I haven’t been able to organize an effective book club yet. I’ve tried about 3 or 4 times and we just never stick it out to the end of the book.

Before, we picked apart books chapter-by-chapter from a writing perspective to figure out what the author was doing. I think it would be effective if we assigned sections each week and on a weekly…[Read more]
